Dog Days of Summer Fun Safety Tips:
1. If you are traveling with your pet this summer, make sure your pet is microchipped, and that you have registered your microchip! A registered microchip is the best way to ensure you will be reuinted with your pet, should you become separated.
2. Take your pet out of the car when you get out. It only takes few minutes for the inside of a car to reach 120 degrees or more, even in the shade. Dogs and cats are more susceptible to heat stroke than their human guardians are.
3. Not all dogs can swim, so if you have a pool it is important to teach your pet how to get out of the pool: show them where the steps are, and practice getting out of the pool with your pet. If swimming in the ocean, just like humans, dogs can get pulled into a strong tide. In either pool or ocean, don't let your dog's natural enthusiasm cause him or her to overdo it; swimming is hard work and they tire more quickly than we do.
4. Be aware of your pets panting when walking or jogging. If your pet is experiencing the summer heat in a winter coat, consider walking or jogging with your pet in the early morning or later evening hours. Make sure your pet has water available during exercise, and has fresh cool water available at home.
